Public Notice - Heating upgrade at St Margarets, Bygrave
For a number of years the PCC have explored different options to make the church a more comfortable venue. We looked at air source heating but discovered that the running costs would be too high because it tries to keep a consistent temperature. The church is normally in use once every two weeks. Infra red heaters above the congregation were also a popular option when we trialled them but it became clear that we would not get permission for the fitting and cabling given the delicate nature and historical significance of the interior walls. We decided on this basis to focus on the pew heaters and find replacements for our current tubular heaters that date from 1959 and take over an hour to warm up. The Diocese expert helped us to compare four different brands and types of pew heater. They all heat up in 15-30 minutes and the wattage is the same or less so the running costs will be lower. The heating effect is not markedly different to the current heaters but will be more efficient in terms of getting up to temperature.
Below is a photo of the test panels in situ.
Our preference is for radiant panels, which will be positioned where the current heaters are, which will mean less new cabling and a lower installation cost. The capital cost of the heaters will be around £3,000, and we have an installation quote of £1,600. We have installed two panels in the front left pew for parishioners to experience, and the feedback has been positive.
